I’m one sore and tired cat this morning as I sit here with my Saturday morning coffee. To say that I over did it yesterday is an understatement. I have a couple fingers on my right hand that look as tho they went to war with something and lost. But I did manage to burn out a large part of the stump that I wanted gone. I’ll see if it’s manageable enough now to get rid of the rest without burning. They’ll be another fire if not.
But while that stump was burning, I worked on another old and rotten stump that keeps getting in the way of mowing the lawn. Some nice size chunks would fall off whenever I gave it a whack with the hatchet but I had to dig around it so I could get it out of the ground.
So I’m digging away around this stump when out pops this mouse which ran over my foot and headed straight to the bushes. I got a little chuckle out of seeing it and and went back to digging. Then I shortly discovered its nest and with it I discovered its babies. So I’m standing there trying to figure out what to do with these things as they started crawling blindly in the hole that I dug. I didn’t want to kill them for the sake of killing them but I couldn’t leave them there either. So I decided to use my shovel and pick them up one by one and moved them close to the bush that I saw Momma mouse disappear in to.
So I go back to digging and after while I catch so movement out of the corner of my eye. A mouse was making its way down the tree and it headed straight to the baby mice. It found one, picked it up and headed back into the bush. I thought that Momma had another nest or found a new place for the babies. I go back to digging.
After a short while I catch some movement once again and it’s Momma mouse coming down the tree and heading straight over to the babies. She picks up another and heads back into the bushes. So I’m wondering just what the hell was going on when I caught some movement on a tree branch. Sure enough it was Momma scurrying across the branch with baby in tow and she headed straight to one of my bird houses. I watched her repeat the trip two more times with the last two and then one more for good measure before she went into the bird house to stay.
I got a good laugh out of it. I now have mouse houses in my trees. Maybe some day I’ll have actual birds instead.
With all the problems mice cause, I have NO problem getting rid of them.

I have trouble killing an animal when it is looking at me even if it is a pest. Somehow a mouse fell into my washing machine and couldn’t get out. I tried to catch it but I was afraid it would jump on me. I didn’t realize they jumped at all til then. So I ran enough water in so it had to swim and caught it in a cup and put it outside. My husband said I should have just killed it, but I couldn’t with it looking at me. Traps I can do. Murder I can’t. Good job for the family.

Your post warms the heart and kudos to you for giving Momma a chance to find another nest for her babies, the mouse house reminds me of some of my favourite children’s stories I used to read as a child!

How cute! I’ve never heard of mouse houses before, but maybe you’ll start a trend.

yeh, let’s not. I don’t need them to try to move in with me. Miss Lily would be busy.

Awwwww!! ❤ Repurposing works in all nature apparently! Good for ol' momma mousie for finding some warm and dry (and safe) shelter. Be a helluva surprise though if the original tenants show up..

Creative mothers. She worked that out in minutes. I would have put money on her being too stupid to even watch you move them and find them, much less move them into a snug safe home.

I thought for sure I’d find them either dead or a snack for this hawk that hangs around the neighborhood.

Well, at least they moved into the bird’s house and not yours. 😀
